Sometimes, marriages just don’t work out.
Many of us spend years getting to know a new person from the inside out, only for it to all come to an end. And this can bring on a lot of emotions.
It’s no surprise, then, that many people choose to reinvent themselves or go through a transformation after a break up or divorce… Including Aquaman actor Jason Momoa.
Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet’s divorce
In the aftermath of his emotionally charged divorce from Lisa Bonet, Jason Momoa has embarked on a pretty intense lifestyle transformation, opting for a humble and unusual living arrangement, despite having enough money to spend his days in luxury.
Momoa, 44, and Bonet, 56, were, at one time, a beloved Hollywood couple known for keeping the details of their romance relatively private and discreet, which sparked curiosity among fans who were eager to unravel the details of their love story.
Interestingly, Momoa confessed that he first saw Bonet on television when she was portraying Denise Huxtable on the sitcom The Cosby Show. Besotted, the future actor reportedly turned to his mother and declared: “Mommy, I want that one.”
Their paths finally crossed at a jazz club through mutual acquaintances in 2005, and it was love at first sight for Momoa. Recounting the experience, he vividly described on The Late Late Show with James Corden: “I literally turned around, and I see her, and she goes, ya know, ‘I’m Lisa.’ I turned around to my friend, and I was like, ‘Ahhh!’ I had fireworks going off inside, man.”
It was this moment that marked the beginning of their journey together, which eventually saw them start a family together (they welcomed two children, a daughter born in 2007 and a son born in 2008) and become husband and wife in 2017.
Five years later, however, in January 2022, this fairytale all came crashing down when the seemingly perfect couple announced their separation after 16 years together. In January, 2024, Bonet filed for divorce – two years after separating. By July this year, they will be legally single, per People.
Momoa and Bonet have spoken about their differences in preferences, with Momoa leaning towards travel and adventure, and Bonet preferring cozy activities like reading, writing, and cooking. Though, despite ending their relationship, they explained that they remain committed to their children and still have a lot of love for each other.
